5 Reasons to Visit the Current River
Share
The Current River in Missouri is one of those places that stays with you long after you’ve left. I just spent three days there with my family, and it was the perfect mix of adventure, relaxation, and togetherness. Between canoeing, swimming, camping, and laughing around the fire, we created memories I know we’ll cherish for years.
If you’re thinking about planning a trip of your own, here are five reasons the Current River deserves a spot on your travel list, straight from my experience.
1. Crystal-Clear Waters
The Current River is spring-fed, which means the water is refreshingly cool and unbelievably clear. We spent hours swimming and fishing, spotting fish beneath us and collecting little river treasures.
Travel Tip: Bring water shoes - the rocky riverbed is beautiful but tough on bare feet.
2. Scenic Canoeing & Kayaking
We launched our canoe trip out of Aker’s Ferry, and it was absolutely beautiful. Drifting past towering limestone bluffs, shaded green banks, and sparkling bends made every mile feel like a postcard. If you’re planning your own float, Jadwin Canoe Rental is another great outfitter that’s well-known in the area.
Travel Tip: Reserve your canoe or kayak ahead of time if you’re visiting on a busy weekend or holiday.
3. Wildlife & Natural Wonders
From crayfish in the shallows to birds soaring overhead, the Current River is full of life. Every stop along the bank was a chance to discover something new, especially for the kids in our group.
4. Camping Under the Stars
We stayed at Montauk State Park Campground, and it made the whole experience even better. Falling asleep to the sound of the river, waking up to birdsong, and gathering around the fire each night created memories you just can’t get at a hotel. I also spotted this hummingbird on the riverbank at our site!
Travel Tip: Pack simple meals and plenty of snacks. After a full day of paddling and swimming, everyone will be hungry.
5. Family Moments That Last
The best part of the trip wasn’t just the scenery, it was who I shared it with. My husband kept things running smoothly, my dad loved being outdoors, my brother was ready for adventure, and my sister’s kids filled the weekend with laughter. Around the fire, we swapped stories and enjoyed being together without distractions.
Already Dreaming of Next Year
By the end of the trip, one thing was clear - we’ll be back! Whether you camp at Montauk, paddle out of Aker’s Ferry, or book with Jadwin, the Current River has a way of bringing people together. Between its clear waters, scenic floats, and family-friendly campgrounds, it’s the kind of place that leaves you refreshed, inspired, and already planning your next visit.
